JOHNSON COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
HEALTH ADVISORY

AVOID CONTACT WITH WATER IN THE MILL CREEK REGION
UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

In collaboration with Johnson County Wastewater and Johnson County Environmental Department, the Johnson County Health Department has issued a health advisory to residents living or recreating near Mill Creek from north of Johnson Drive, to the Kansas River due to an accidental discharge of untreated wastewater from the Mill Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in the City of Shawnee.

The Johnson County Health Department has issued this advisory to radio, TV stations and the newspapers for residents living or recreating near the creek in the vicinity of the discharge. The Health Department advises individuals to have no contact with Mill Creek at this location until further notice due to potential health risks. Residents are also advised to keep their pets from making contact with the water.

Johnson County Wastewater crews repaired the pump station and other equipment on the morning of Monday, October 21, 2002, and are monitoring this location to ensure there are no further discharges into the creek. Runoff from recent rains may also contribute to higher than normal bacterial counts in this stream.

The Johnson County Environmental Department is conducting water quality tests on the creek to determine when this notice can be lifted.

For updates, please call Johnson County Wastewater’s Public Information Line at 913-681-3200, extension 2119 or www.jcw.org.
