Johnson County Wastewater to meet with residents in pilot areas 

Olathe, KS, Feb. 4, 2011 - Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) is working to reduce or eliminate excess rain water and groundwater from entering the JCW sanitary sewer system in the older Northeast part of Johnson County. As part of that effort, JCW is conducting a pilot project in areas of Shawnee and Prairie Village. These areas are representative of the entire watershed which is prone to sanitary sewer overflows and basement backups due to high levels of Inflow and Infiltration (I/I – rain water and groundwater which enters the JCW sanitary sewer system through cracked or broken pipes, root penetrations, illicit building or house connections, and other defects within the system).

These areas were inspected in 2009, and the project is now in the design phase.

JCW is hosting the second of three public meetings to discuss these sanitary sewer improvements and encourages residents in the affected areas to attend one of the two meetings. Representatives of JCW and their consultants will be present to share information about the project and answer questions. It is important for residents to attend because removal of identified Inflow and Infiltration sources may require construction work inside homes and buildings, and on private property.

The two pilot areas and public meetings are: 

The Shawnee area bound approximately by 49 th Terrace on the north, Johnson Drive on the south, Barton on the east, and Long Street on the west. The public meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Shawnee Town Museum, 11501 W. 57 th Street. 

The area of Prairie Village one to two blocks east and west of Roe from 75 th Street to 79 th Street. That public meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Prairie Baptist Church, 7416 Roe Avenue.
