_2009 Sewer Infiltration and Inflow (I&I) Pilot Study
>Turkey Creek, Mission Main, and Leawood Service Areas

Project Background and Objectives

Sanitary sewer system performance within the Turkey Creek, Mission Main and Leawood Watersheds is impacted by the magnitude of wet weather flows that enter the sewer system. The wet weather flows are due to system defects and illicit connections that result in high rates of rainwater and groundwater entering the sewer system. This is called infiltration and inflow, or I&I. This pilot study is needed to fill a critical gap in the data that exists relative to the system improvements necessary to adequately manage I&I, and in so doing meet both customer service goals and regulatory requirements.

Late Breaking News

  • The project began in March 2009 and the study phase is scheduled to be completed by April 2010.
  • Building inspections are underway. Approximately 300 inspections out of a total of 1300 have been completed, and we are continuing to schedule and conduct up to 50 – 60 inspections per week.

Quick Facts

This project will involve a series of inspections, including televising of sewer lines and house service laterals, visually inspecting homes and businesses (including internal basement plumbing), manhole inspections, smoke testing, and various other inspections. The project will take place in three selected areas suspected of having high I&I.

  1. Q: Who is conducting the study?

    A:
Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) is conducting the study.
  2. Q: Who is performing the inspections?

    A:
The engineering firms of Black & Veatch/TREKK and CH2M HILL/HDR/Archer will be involved in the inspection program. Most of the field work will be performed by TREKK with some participation by HDR/Archer.
  3. Q: Do I have to be at home during the building inspections?
