_2009 Sewer Infiltration and Inflow (I&I) - Initial Pilot Study |
>Turkey Creek, Mission Main, and Leawood Service Areas |
| |
|
|
Project Background and Objectives
Sanitary sewer system performance within the Turkey Creek, Mission Main and Leawood Watersheds is impacted by the magnitude of wet weather flows that enter the sewer system. The wet weather flows are due to system defects and illicit connections that result in high rates of rainwater and groundwater entering the sewer system. This is called infiltration and inflow, or I&I. This pilot study is needed to fill a critical gap in the data that exists relative to the system improvements necessary to adequately manage I&I, and in so doing meet both customer service goals and regulatory requirements.
Quick Facts
- The pilot study has moved into the design phase. For additional information go to Nelson WWTP Complex Pilot Infiltration/Inflow Rehabititation (http://www.jcw.org/eng-i&istudy.htm).
- The project began in March 2009 and the study phase was completed April 2010.
- This project involved a series of inspections, including televising of sewer lines and house service laterals, visually inspecting homes and businesses (including internal basement plumbing), manhole inspections, smoke testing, and various other inspections. The project took place in three selected areas suspected of having high I&I.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Who is conducting the study?
2. Who is performing the inspections?
3. Do I have to be at home during the building inspections?
4. Will I be notified if something is wrong with my sewer system?
5. How long will the inspection take?
1. Who is conducting the study?
Answer: Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) is conducting the study.
2. Who is performing the inspections?
Answer: The engineering firms of Black & Veatch/TREKK and CH2M HILL/HDR/Archer are involved in the inspection program. Most of the field work will be performed by TREKK with some participation by HDR/Archer.
3. Do I have to be at home during the building inspections?
Answer: The owner or tenant must be at home during the inspection.
4. Will I be notified if something is wrong with my sewer system?
Answer: The inspector will notify you immediately of any defect or service line blockage observed during the inspection that should be addressed to avoid an imminent sewer backup. You will not be notified immediately of defects that are not imminent in nature. However, prior to the construction/rehabilitation phase of the project you will be notified of any deficiencies within your sewer system and a schedule will be proposed for correcting the deficiencies.
5. How long will the inspection take?
Answer: Typically 30 to 60 minutes.
